Italic gives a line a softer, quieter emphasis than bold. It reads as a whisper rather than a shout, which makes it the natural pick for a tagline under a name, a quoted line in a post, or the subtitle of a profile that already uses bold for the headline.
Italic pairs well with bold: bold for the claim, italic for the aside. It is also the style that looks least like shouting, so it works in professional contexts such as LinkedIn where a fully bold bio can come across as loud.
The italic alphabet lives in the mathematical block, so a handful of letters look slightly narrower than a real cursive font would. If you want the flowing, handwritten look instead, use the cursive style, which uses the script alphabet.
